COMPOSITION SYNCHRONIZATION LICENSE

A Synchronization License (or "sync license") is the legal agreement that gives a filmmaker, producer, or other content creator the right to use the underlying composition of a song (i.e., the music and lyrics) in connection with audiovisual content such as a movie, TV show, advertisement, online video, or video game. This license is obtained from the song's publisher or songwriter, and it is required whether you use the original recording or re-record the song yourself. It does not cover use of the actual sound recording (the "master")—that requires a separate master use license.

2. Who is it for?

A sync license is essential for anyone wanting to use a song’s music and lyrics in timed relation to visuals. This includes:

· Film and TV producers

· Advertising agencies

· Documentary filmmakers

· YouTubers or streaming content creators

· Brands creating marketing content

· Video game developers

· Podcast creators (with video)

3. What does it include?

The synchronization license defines the terms under which the musical composition can be used, including usage rights, compensation, and legal protections. Whether the license is for the full song, instrumental, or a portion (e.g., chorus), or whether it allows for alterations or adaptations, all terms must be clearly outlined. It's negotiated directly with the publisher(s) or rights holders.

Key terms and sections in a Synchronization License Agreement usually include:

· Grant of Rights – Specifies the right to synchronize the composition with visuals (e.g., one-time use in a feature film).

· Scope of Use – Defines where and how the composition may appear (e.g., in trailers, TV ads, behind-the-scenes footage).

Re-Using the Form Template:

1. You may use an a la carte template unlimited times (as long as the service is available subject to Terms and Conditions). The only access to your template is via the email link. Keep it in a place you will remember. ShowbizWise will not be held responsible for lost emails and will not send replacement links.

2. Each use of the template is generated from a blank document from scratch. Your previous entries are not saved.
